FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the difference between the 2G network and the 4G network?
A network is a system that enables information transfer. A mobile network is a system that uses radio waves to connect the various network elements. The familiar G designation used to describe mobile networks refers to the generation of technology on which the network is built. So, the 2G network is the second generation of mobile network, while the 4G network is the fourth generation of mobile network.
Why is the 2G network being discontinued?
Simply put, the 2G network is much slower than the 4G or 5G network. As a result, the demand for the 2G network is decreasing significantly, and it is no longer profitable for GSM providers to maintain the 2G network. The freed-up frequencies from the 2G network can in turn be used for new networks, making them even faster.
Who is discontinuing the 2G network? And when?
All Dutch mobile network providers are discontinuing the offering of the 2G network. Odido, formerly T-Mobile, has already discontinued the 2G network. KPN and Vodafone have indicated that they will end support for the 2G network by the end of 2025.
Why switch to 4G?
The 2G network is expected to remain largely intact until the end of 2025. In principle, you don’t need to switch to products that work on the 4G network yet. This is recommended because otherwise you may find yourself in a tight spot by that time. The more people wait, the more individuals will need assistance with their transition in an increasingly shorter period.
Why is this important?
The Track and Trace Unit (TTU) or units that you have directly or indirectly obtained from us will soon no longer work as desired. This is because these units have so far always transmitted their data over 2G. Now that the 2G network is being discontinued, this is no longer possible. As a result, our new units have the capability to transmit their data over 4G. With that, you are also assured of a TTU that works as it should even after 2025.
What can I do to navigate this change as smoothly as possible?
We recommend that you contact your respective dealer as soon as possible regardless. They can provide you with more information about the upcoming 2G to 4G transition. In doing so, they can provide you with information about the potential consequences of this transition for you.
